Licenses
Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) adheres to the following rules for agent and broker licensing and appointments.

Before soliciting a product, participating in a sale, or receiving commission from a sale, agents and brokers must be properly licensed for the product and appointed (if necessary) in the state where the application will be signed (and must be licensed in any “risk-located” state, if applicable).

MassMutual cannot accept business from an agent or broker who is not properly licensed and appointed.

Long Term Care Licensing and Education Requirements
Producers should begin the licensing process early to ensure they have met requirements before soliciting Long Term Care insurance products:
  • In most states, producers must be licensed and appointed by MassMutual for the sale of life and health insurance.
  • Some states have additional licensing, pre-sale and continuing education requirements, which must be satisfied prior to selling Long Term Care insurance products.
  • Licensing rules and procedures are applicable as outlined in all of the sections above.
Contract State and Application Requirements
The contract state dictates the correct application forms to use as well as other state related requirements. The contract state is the state where the proposed owner or insured lives or works and where the application is signed. If the application is signed in a state other than the state where the proposed owner or insured lives or works, then the default contract state is the owner’s resident state. Other rules apply as well:
  • The contract state for Minnesota (MN), Missouri (MO) and Texas (TX) residents is always that resident’s state, regardless of where the application is signed. MN, MO or TX forms are required and the writing agent must be appointed in those states.
  • If the proposed insured lives in a "risk-located" state, the writing agent must also be licensed in the proposed insured’s resident state.
